Seeking Help On Compulsive Gambling Addiction Through Emails

Over the past year I have received a significant number of emails seeking help in their battle against compulsive gambling addiction. My goal was to help others who were going through what I went through. I have read every email received from around the world. I realized that people affected by gambling addiction needed help and they wanted it now.

I received emails from teenagers to seniors, family members and friends all looking for a solution. I also received emails from high school parents looking for statistical information, reporters from around the world, talk shows and political parties. I was amazed that people were finally realizing that compulsive gambling addiction was negatively affecting our society.

Based on the information in the emails I have learned that people are very similar around the world. It doesn’t matter what country you live in, we all have feelings, emotions and a desire to live a better life.

I have also received a few hostile emails from compulsive gamblers lashing out at the world. These are people who have lost all their financial resources, trust, family and friends and had no where to go. This at first was the most difficult emails to handle. As time went on I began to understand what they were looking for and through this process we have become comrades in our battle against gambling addiction.

Then there were individuals who emailed me and used the words I can’t go on living like this anymore. These emails concerned me the most. I always responded “If you are feeling depressed or suicidal you should go and talk it out. There are emergency hotlines, family doctor, friends, relatives and other professionals who can help you get through this period in your life. I also shared with them others who felt the same way. As each day passed and they started their recovery their self esteem increased and their desire to live increased.

Then I received emails from gamblers anonymous members upset by some of my articles. These emails I enjoyed because I knew people were listening. To set the record straight Gamblers Anonymous is wonderful for the people that they have helped and continue to help. The GA program has a lot to offer those that are willing to participate in a twelve step program. Compulsive gamblers need to find a program that works for them. It just so happens that a large percentage of the emails I receive are from people who tried Gamblers Anonymous and were unsuccessful. People involved in gambling addiction recovery programs need to be very realistic and open minded. I received one email from a person who replaced his gambling addiction with exercise. He told me that it’s been eighteen months now and his life has completely turned around. Other emails I received were from people who were able to stop on their own, but their friend was not able to.

Companies who are involved in gambling addiction recovery programs should all work together. We also have different approaches to helping people with their gambling addiction but the one thing in common. We are all here to help people rebuild their lives in order for them to have a brighter future. It’s time to work together.

You can read some of these emails at my website.

Mr. Howard Keith has an extensive background in dealing with compulsive gamblers, relatives and friends of gamblers and teenage gamblers. Mr. Keith believes there are many alternatives to aid in the recovery of a gambling addiction verses a twelve step program. A large percentage of his emails were from compulsive gamblers looking for an alternative to Gamblers Anonymous and twelve step programs. Gamblers Anonymous also helps a significant number of people each year but there is a large percentage that they are unable to reach.

Help! I Want to Stop Gambling Now

Have you decided that it is finally time to stop gambling? Have you also realized that you need help? Are you uncomfortable talking about it? First of all, many people realize it is a hard decision to make and that you may be embarrassed. It is hard to ask for help sometimes, but at some time or other, everyone needs help. It isn’t a sign of weakness to ask for help, in fact, it often takes strength to admit you have a problem, like a gambling addiction or compulsive gambling, and could use some help. As a therapist I have often heard people say that they feel different than other people and feel separated or isolated. In fact, that is something that many people have in common.

I often heard, “If only people knew the real me.”

The interesting thing is that I heard the same thing over and over and yet, each person felt that he or she was the only one in the world who felt that way. You will be amazed to learn that millions of people have felt the way you feel now and there are many people who understand exactly what you are going through and are willing to help you. You can also rest assured that they will not look down on you. Yes there will be some smug people who’ve never dealt with a powerful addiction who may look down on people who have to deal with an addiction like gambling, but their opinions don’t matter because they’ve never lived through what you’re living through. You might say they are ignorant.

Every thing that we do in life, both the big things and the little accomplishments, have steps that are involved. For instance, when you start your day, there are steps. First, you wake up, next you get out of bed, then you may walk to the kitchen. The same is true of getting dressed or any other thing you do. Each thing you do starts with a single step. It is the same with stopping gambling.

The first step, which you have already accomplished, is to admit you have a problem. The next step is to think about ways to solve the problem. You need to gather information so you will know what you can do and how to solve the problem of getting your life back under control. Where do you get information? From someone who has already done what you want to do and has gone through what you are now experiencing. In other words, it would help to talk to other people who’ve dealt with a gambling problem.

Where do you find them? Well, you may know someone who has successfully stopped gambling, but if not, or if you’d rather talk to someone who doesn’t know you, you can always call GA, Gamblers Anonymous. Just like the name implies, the call can be anonymous. You may go to a meeting and hear how other people are coping and that may be anonymous as well. People in GA do not go out and tell other people what they’ve heard in a GA meeting. You know the saying, “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas,” well what happens in a GA meeting stays in the meeting, as well.

The point is, if you’ve gotten to the point where you can say, “Help, I need to stop gambling now,” Then you are ready to gather information using the national hotline for GA that will provide that help. Just one step at a time and the next step is to gather some information. If you look at it that way, it will be do-able, perhaps not always easy, but you can do it.

Online Gambling in Atlantic City

For better or for worse, online gambling is coming to New Jersey.

In late February, Chris Christie officially signed into law a bill that legalized internet gambling in Atlantic City.

Initially the bill was vetoed by the Governor because of issues surrounding transparency and taxes. Lawmakers adjusted the text and the amended bill passed by an overwhelming majority in the legislature and earned Christie’s seal of approval.

Here are the basics of the bill:

- Casinos located in Atlantic City will be able to apply for a license to offer online gambling. Only the twelve official Atlantic City casinos will be eligible for the license. No other organizations can offer internet gambling, and face stiff fines if they do. All facilities used for the operation of internet gambling must be located within city limits; only bets that are received by a server in Atlantic City will be legal.

- Players must be “physically present” in New Jersey to place wagers. In the future, New Jersey may develop agreements with other states where internet gambling is legal to permit out-of-state gambling. The casino’s equipment must verify players’ locations before accepting wagers.

- Any games available to play in the casinos can be played online. (For comparison, Nevada only allows poker.) As of now, sports betting will not be protected by this bill, although the state of New Jersey is trying to fight the federal statute barring the legalization of sports betting.

- The bill has all kinds of provisions to keep gambling addiction at bay, such as requiring the prominent display of the 1-800-GAMBLER hotline number, a way to set maximum bets and losses over a certain period of time, and tracking player losses to identify and limit users who may demonstrate addictive gambling behavior.

- Revenue from online gambling will carry a 15% tax. The Christie administration states that about $180 million in revenue for the state will be generated from this tax, but some analysts think this number is seriously overestimated.

The official regulations, which the bill required the Division of Gaming Enforcement to produce, were released on June 3, and are subject to a “public comment period” until August 2 before being finalized. These rules include details such as how a casino acquires the appropriate licenses and procedures for maintaining network security on gambling sites.

So, will online gambling actually benefit the state?

The Good

Revenues from Atlantic City casinos have been on the decline for the past seven years, and online gambling could be what saves the failing casinos. Since 2006, casino revenue has dropped from $5.2 billion to around $3 billion. Online gambling could be a $500 million to $1 billion industry in New Jersey, which may be enough to keep struggling casinos afloat and save jobs in Atlantic City. Further, even though estimates of tax revenue are all over the map, there is potential for online gambling to be a considerably valuable source of money for the state. The casinos will also have to pay a tax to the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority, which will provide further assistance to struggling casinos in Atlantic City.

For the player, low overhead costs mean better prizes and more opportunities to play. Casinos can incent players with free “chips” that have minimal costs for them but give players more opportunities to play and win. The convenience of gambling online allows players to play more with less travel.

BAD:

One of the goals of the bill is supposedly to attract more people to visit the brick-and-mortar casinos, but it is hard to say if online gambling will actually lead to this outcome. One could speculate it could even cause people to go to the casinos less (However, this seems unlikely; the social element and the free drinks are lost in online gambling. Also, research indicates that, at least with poker, internet gaming does not reduce casino gaming.) Advertising for the host casino will be allowed on the online gambling sites, which could possibly encourage people to visit the casino but could also be annoying for players.

Online gambling could be seriously devastating for people who have gambling addictions, or even cause people to develop them, raising financial and moral concerns. Even with all the preventative steps the bill requires, it will definitely be much harder to cut off compulsive gamblers if they can place bets anywhere with an internet connection.

Regardless, it is going to be a while before the casinos can actually kick off their online gambling offerings. The regulations need to be finalized and casinos need to apply for licensure and develop their gambling websites. This means the casinos will not be enjoying this new source of revenue during the 2013 summer season, which could be Atlantic City’s toughest season ever following recovery from Hurricane Sandy.

Gambling Addiction – How it Can Ruin Your Family and Business

It is hard to witness the destruction of a friend and his family as a result of an addiction. It is a helpless feeling. Hopefully, by sharing this story with you, you will be able to help a friend or loved one avoid this road to self destruction.

This friend, let’s call him Gary, enjoyed getting together with his friends on a Saturday night for an evening of playing pool. It seems innocent enough when he decided that we should all play for quarters. We all thought that this would make the game more fun and competitive, which it did.

Gary loved to win. The bigger the pot the bigger the celebration. Little did I know that this was the beginning of his gambling addiction.

You see, gambling addicts experience the same rush as a crack addict. That rush is created when they win. They begin to crave that feeling to the point where it dominates every waking moment.

Next we learned that Gary was skipping the pool games so that he could go to the local Indian casino where he enjoyed playing poker. We stopped getting together on the weekends. I saw Gary less and less. I later learned that Gary had taken to playing poker online every evening in front of his computer drinking and placing online bets.

Is it no surprise that soon Gary’s business was in trouble. He was neglecting his customers and his revenue was dropping. His creditors were calling. His wife couldn’t stand the stress. She left him.

These are the classic signs of a gambling addict. The gambling becomes a compulsion that defies logic and rational thought. The gambler seeks the gambling high at any cost. His or her life is ruined through the destruction of personal relationships and the burden of increasing debt.

I hope that you share this article with any person you think may be suffering from a gambling addiction. It may help them avoid the road to self-destruction. There are many self-help groups available and qualified counselors are willing to help. In fact, many casinos will have a 24 hour gambling addiction hotline available if you ask.

5 Tips to Stop You From a Gambling Addiction Relapse

Gambling addiction relapse is very common, especially during times of stress. There are many things that you can do to prevent yourself from a relapse from your gambling addiction. This list is far from complete, however, I believe that these are five strategies that have personally helped me from going back to the casino and pumping my heart-earned money back into a slot machine.

1. Pick up the phone and call a friend, family member, Gambling Hotline, or Gamblers Anonymous member when the urge hits. Usually when we have an urge to gamble we are really looking for some nurturing from those who love us. Sometimes just a conversation with someone who cares can help your gambling urge pass.

2. Try to find something constructive to do such as taking a walk, creating a new recipe, or even going to the mall or bookstore. Try to do something fun and stimulating since this will be replacing the gambling activity that you are trying to stop yourself from engaging in. Fill the void.. with something to keep you busy.

3. Get out a pencil and paper and write down what it felt like when you were driving home from the casino broke, despondent, angry, and depressed. Describe these feelings in detail. You will start to feel those horrible feelings by just writing these down.

4. Visualize in your mind the drive back from the casino. After writing, use this power of visualization to really experience those feelings. Spend a minute or two doing this. After writing down your thoughts and feelings, and then visualizing these, you will truly experience the physiological feelings of the drive back from the casino or other gambling venue. You will not feel good.. trust me.

5. Reward yourself for not gambling. Buy yourself a small gift or a book. Rent a movie and enjoy your time away from gambling. You will feel uplifted and proud of yourself for not giving into your gambling addiction impulse.
